Baggage FAQ

All info about baggages

Before departs

I am leaving with a national flight. How many cases can I take? With what weight?
There is no single rule: the instructions are subject to frequent changes that depend on the airline and IATA (International Air Transport Association) international regulations. It is therefore wise to contact the airline or travel agency. If the baggage has a weight or size over the allowed limit, an extra charge will have to be paid, which varies depending on the airline and destination.

I am flying to an international destination. How many cases can I take? With what weight?
In general it is possible to take 20 kilos of baggage that can be subdivided among different bags and cases. For the United States and Canada you can take two bags that must not weigh more than 32 kilos each. The instructions are subject to frequent changes that depend on the airline and IATA (International Air Transport Association) international regulations. It is therefore wise to contact the airline or travel agency. If the baggage has a weight or size over the allowed limit, an extra charge will have to be paid, which varies from one airline to another.

And hand luggage?
You can take only one piece of hand luggage weighing no more than 5 kilos and the sum of the three dimensions (base, height, breadth) must not exceed 115 cm. In any case, contact your travel agency or the airline, since the instructions may vary between one airline and another.

Can I put scissors or knives in my hand luggage?
All pointed objects exceeding 6cm lenght that might become improper weapons must be placed in the hold baggage, otherwise they may be seized by the authorities. For further information please consult the file "Rules for civil aviation security".

Which objects are not allowed in hand luggage?
You may not include in your hand luggage all items considered dangerous for flight safety, such as: toy weapons, catapults, cutlery, work tools, darts, syringes, sewing needles, sticks for sporting use, scissors, knives, razor blades, cutting tools, shears and similar items with a blade exceeding 6cm. To take these items with you they must be put in the hold baggage.

What are the restrictions on carrying liquid substances in hand luggage?
It is forbidden to carry liquids and similar products, except in containers not exceeding 100 ml closed in a clear plastic, disposable, re-sealable bag with a capacity of no more than a total of one litre, which must be screened at the security points separately from the other luggage. The container shall display the capacity; higher quantities of liquids must be placed in the hold baggage.
Medicinal and diet products (like baby food) and items bought in the Duty Free shops (in the boarding areas) are not subject to this regulation, provided that they are contained in sealed bags with the Duty Free brand. It is a good rule to keep the receipt in case further controls are necessary.
For further details, please read the information by ENAC, Ente Nazionale Aviazione Civile, on carrying liquid substances in hand luggage. For further information consult the site www.enac-italia.it.
Thanks to the installation at the Fast Track priority passage of an innovative X-ray apparatus that allows the contents of hand luggage to be scanned in three dimensions, for passengers using the fast track passage, liquids, aerosols and gels (such as water bottles, cosmetics and foodstuffs) can be left inside the hand luggage, instead of being separated in special trays: this speeds up the time it takes to pass through the security gates.

Can I take medicines on board in my hand luggage?
Yes.

Which objects are not allowed in hold baggage?
Compressed gases (inflammable, non inflammable, cooled, poisonous, such as butane, oxygen, propane and oxygen for breathing apparatus); corrosive products; explosives (e.g. fireworks, rockets, ammunition, pistol bullets); mercury thermometers; substances that release inflammable gases in contact with water; infective substances (e.g. bacteria and live viruses); poisonous substances (insecticides, weed killers, arsenic and cyanide); radioactive materials; oxidising substances; magnetising substances; alarm devices.

Is it possible to take a personal computer on board?

I need to travel with very cumbersome baggage. How do I embark it? And how do I collect it?
The instructions vary depending on the airline. When you buy your ticket it is advisable to ask for detailed information about packing and about any additional charges.
