Self-driving personal mobility devices

SEDIA (SEat Designed for Interactive Aiports)

The project, realized in collaboration with the Turin startup Alba Robot within Turin City Lab, innovation incubator of the City of Turin to which the Airport adheres, is aimed at testing the use of SEDIA (seat Designed for Interactive Aiports), an innovative autonomous driving device and voice commands.

The experimentation, first in Italy to be applied in the airport field, aims to use a personal mobility device equipped with artificial intelligence in a real operating environment.

The initiative is divided into three phases:

  • a phase of codesign, in which the fields of application of the experimentation, the normative aspects and the operating requirements of the assistance to Passengers to Reduced Mobility in airport within have been defined;
  • a phase of validation and optimization, with setting of the platform and algorithms, the mapping of airport spaces, real-world testing and the use of personal mobility without the direct involvement of airport users;
  • finally, a phase of operational experimentation, which provides for the use of personal mobility devices Alba Robot in the real assistance of passengers with reduced mobility of the airport of Turin who request it.

The application of this innovative solution offers the advantage to the staff of Turin Airport to be able to devote more to the support and the relationship with passengers, relieving themselves from mere handling.

In addition, the autonomous driving system on predefined maps allows vehicles to autonomously relocate to the appropriate service stalls, once the assistance is finished, optimizing fleet management.
