Torino Airport has introduced a fleet of electric vehicles for several aircraft ground handling activities, with the aim of reducing direct emissions associated with the use of conventional fuel-powered vehicles.

Turnaround refers to the set of ground handling operations required between one flight and the next. It includes several different activities, each carried out through specific procedures and operational vehicles.

The electric fleet used for ground handling activities includes:
 

• baggage tractors;
• GPUs – Ground Power Units, used to supply power to the aircraft and its systems while the engines are switched off;
• passenger stairs;
• baggage conveyor belts;
• ambulifts for passengers with reduced mobility;
• aircraft tractors or pushback vehicles.
   

Based on available estimates, the use of electric vehicles in the activities considered can avoid approximately 100 kg of direct CO₂ emissions per turnaround, compared with the use of equivalent diesel-powered vehicles.

Based on the current use of the electric fleet, the estimated reduction in direct CO₂ emissions can exceed 1 tonne per day.

The estimates refer to direct emissions from the vehicles used in the activities considered and to a comparison with equivalent diesel-powered vehicles.

Torino Airport is continuing its fleet renewal programme, with the target of reaching at least 70% hybrid or fully electric vehicles by 2028 within the operational scope defined by the plan.

The fleet also includes an electric minivan dedicated to executive services for General Aviation and an electric ambulance used for medical assistance on the apron.
